ANC Youth League Release

HELEN ZILLE CONTNUES TO EXCEL AS NUMBER ONE RACIST AND DISTRACTOR OF GENDER STRUGGLES:

12 May 2009

The ANC YL is disgusted by remarks attributed to the racist girl Helen Zille, who when failing to defend her stupid and sexist decision to appoint predominantly white males into her cabinet, attacks the President of the Republic of South Africa. The ANC YL calls on Helen Zille to respect the office of the President of the Republic of South Africa and stop making stupid and degrading remarks against President Jacob Zuma. Zille has appointed an all male cabinet of useless people, majority of whom are her boyfriends and concubines so that she can continue to sleep around with them, yet she claims to have the moral authority to question our President.

If the fake racist girl Zille continues to speak hogwash like she has been doing during elections, we will take militant action against her, and demonstrate to her that she does not have monopoly over the Western Cape. The fake racist girl who was dropped on a head as child should understand that South Africa will never be a Mickey-mouse Republic like she wants to portray it. An absolute majority of South Africans support President Jacob Zuma and will find it very disgusting for a fake racist apartheid agent to continue undermining the highest office in South Africa.

DDT – What the heck is up with the UN?

May 12, 2009

I find this supremely confusing.

Last week, the UN announced a plan to rid the world of DDT by 2020. According to the Ethiopian Daily Monitor, the announcement came from UNEP and the WHO.

Meanwhile, it looks like DDT spraying is going on, if not with UN approval, then right under their noses. From this week's OCHA Ethiopia Humanitarian Bulletin:

… According to information received from the Welayita zone health department, approximately 77,830 clinical cases of malaria have been reported in Boloso Sore, Damot Fulassa, and Bolos Bombe woredas over the last four weeks. Similarly high cases are reported in Gamo Gofa zone, Konso and Burji special woredas. The Regional Health Bureau is trying to address the situation and DDT spraying is underway. UNICEF dispatched 4,500 Rapid Diagnosis Test and provided technical assistance to the RHB to support the bureau in controlling the situation.

Who's doing the spraying? It's unclear. Maybe I'll shoot an email to the WHO.

wine fest review for @RafikiKenya

March 21, 2009

Light and refreshing wines shone brightest at this year's Nairobi Wine Show at the Holiday Inn in Westlands. Unusually hot and dry weather made heavier reds (and even heavier whites) less appealing than they would normally be at this time of year.

The festival showcased producers and estates from South Africa, Australia, Argentina and notably, Kenya. The South African wines, more familiar to my palette after living in Africa for several years, were palatable and pleasant on the whole, but the Kenyan wines were – surprisingly – the most interesting.

KWAL – the Kenyan Wine Agencies, Limited – produces a Cabernet Sauvignon from Machackos. While the wine is not extrordinary, it is serviceable and pleasant – certainly on par with the lower-end of South African wines, and surpassing Drosty-Hoff (the all-too-familiar "boxi" wine served in most Kenyan bars and hotelis). The Cabernet – from Yatta Vineyards, outside of Machakos, retails for 400 Kes.

But by far the most delicious and surprising offering was from Lileshwa vineyards outside Naivasha. Their 2007 Rose is outstanding – especially for its price. It is light and refreshing – perfect for garden parties and barbeques. It's dry – not off-dry, like so many wines here – with a heavier mouthfeel and more layers of flavour than Lileshwa's other product – a rather flat and uninteresting Sauvignon Blanc. Lileshwa's Rose is retails at 300 Kes – a real bargain – but is currently only availavle at the River Cafe on Limuru Road, Runda. (Past Village Market – look for the "gourmet" sign on your left).

I hesitate to review the other wines on offer, because none of them stood out. Below, however, are my recommendations for supermaket wine picks in Nairobi, based on taste and price.

Whites

Every day: Douglas Green, The Beach House (South Africa) – light, sauvignon-based white wine

Special occasion – KVW Riesling – light, tasty, and dry.

Reds

Every day: Bellingham Dragon's Lair 2006 – this is sophisticated and delicious. It doesn't scream in your face like many Pinotage or Cabernet Franc-dominated South African wines might. (It's 84% Shiraz, 11% Mourvedre, 5% Viognier – the Mourvedre makes a difference, and gives the wine a more old-world taste than many modern South African vintages possess.)

Special occasion – Tomassi Amarone – available at Wines of the World, Kileleshwa. Reminiscent of chestnuts roasting on an open fire and other cliches – while this wine was wholly inappropriate for the oppressive weather, it is delicious on a cold day, and has a subtle taste of cinnamon and raisins. It's heavy on alcohol – a small glass after an evening meal, preferably beside a roaring fire, is the best way to enjoy Amarone.

Food

No spectacular foods, though the cheeses and Farmer's Choice smokies (with fruit and olives) paired nicely with the wines on offer.

Beer

Sierra had a booth, showcasing their Blonde, Amber and Porter style beers. While the Porter is really more like an Amber, it is the best beer on offer, with rich flavors and nuttiness the others (including the so-called "Amber" and "Blonde") don't possess.

learning computers in Tanzania

March 11, 2009

Just found this. I wrote it in 2004. things have changed a lot in Dar,
but most of the country is pretty much the same.

“it’s very hard to learn computers in a country where the university
has considerably less technology than the wealthy individuals who can
afford it. For example, I traveled to an internet cafe to type this
because the ones on campus (30 cents an hour) were all full. This one
is a DOLLAR an hour. And it’s not even that fast.”

and from the same email:

“HELP. i can’t speak swahili OR english.”

Hahaha
